Gastric sleeve - surgery for obesity

The gastric sleeve is a surgical technique in which part of the stomach is extirpatedleaving the remaining part shaped like a tube.

This intervention means the stomach can be reduced by 80%, making the patient have a greater sensation of feeling full and notably reducing the sensation of being hungry.

This intervention is carried out under general anaesthetic and is done by laparoscope, a minimally-invasive technique.

The operation time, usually between one and two hours, may vary depending on the difficulty of the case.

Days in hospital: 2 to 4 days

Patients usually lose most of their excess weight in 12 to 18 months after the intervention, although the result is subject to adhering to a new lifestyle.
